Why visible layers are important

It all started with a Creality Ender 3 V2 – affectionately called the Prototype Printer by me.

The layer height of the first BAL model was designed to be visible from the outset. The individual layers run parallel to the long side of the object. This has not only an aesthetic but also a functional reason: it makes it easy to wipe ash off the surface.

The design of the 3D printer itself did not initially allow for a finer finish. So, I didn't try to hide the layers, but rather worked with them.

What is striking about this: The visible layers give the object more depth. Each individual layer creates a small edge and thus another opportunity for light and shadow. The surface appears more sculptural and vibrant.

In 3D printing, one of the constant challenges is to keep the layer height as small as possible.

Smaller layers generally mean a smoother surface, a finer appearance and – depending on the object – also cleaner functions, but also longer printing times, as more layers are applied. A large part of the optimization in 3D printing therefore consists of continuously improving layer heights, slicer settings and printing parameters, and adapting the hardware accordingly.

After years of optimization, it is now possible to do the exact opposite: deliberately use visible layers – with depth, structure and character. The layers are not simply a defect or a limitation of the process. They are part of its language.

And that is exactly what fascinates me about FDM printing. It is a technology that still raises questions and amazes people.

No matter whether you print an incense holder, a vase, a chair or even an entire house out of concrete using the FDM process: The layers remain characteristic. They make a 3D-printed object unmistakable.

For BAL, the layers are therefore not something that absolutely has to disappear. They are part of the object.
